City coverage

How to find out whether your city is covered, how to browse products by city, and how to request a city we don't yet have.

How many cities are covered?

Shovel Radar covers 382 Canadian cities across every province and all 3 territories. The full list is at shovelradar.com/cities/.

Coverage spans from major CMAs (Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, Ottawa) down to cities of 15,000–50,000 people. Federal procurement data (CanadaBuys, MERX, sole-source notices) is bundled into every plan regardless of which city you subscribe to.

Coverage tiers

Not all cities have the same depth. The number of available products per city depends on what that city publishes as open data.

TierDescriptionExample cities
Deep coverage 15+ products available; real-time API source; weekly delivery Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Vancouver
Standard coverage 5–14 products; weekly or bi-weekly delivery Ottawa, Halifax, Hamilton, Saskatoon, Regina, Kelowna
Light coverage 1–4 products; monthly or quarterly refresh Smaller regional cities, Atlantic Canada, Northern territories

Each city's landing page at /cities/[city-slug]/ lists the available products and their refresh cadence. Deep-coverage cities are flagged with a star on the city directory.

My city isn't listed — what can I do?

If your city isn't in the 382, the most likely reason is that the municipality doesn't publish commercial permits or business licences via an open-data API. Most Canadian cities over 50,000 people do publish this data; some smaller municipalities and a handful of larger cities (notably in Quebec) use proprietary systems that don't expose a public API.

Email matthew@shovelradar.com with the city name and your trade focus. We'll check within a week whether a public data source exists. If it does, we can typically add the city within 2 weeks at no extra cost — it joins the standard catalogue.

If no usable public data source exists, we'll tell you honestly and point you to the nearest covered city instead.

Tip for multi-province trades: you can stack cities at 50% off for every city beyond your primary. A national-licence trade can subscribe to Calgary (primary) + Toronto + Vancouver for less than 2.5x the Calgary price. See FAQ → Pricing for the multi-city discount example.

Federal and provincial data

Federal procurement data (CanadaBuys contract awards, MERX solicitations, sole-source notices, Indigenous procurement) is included in every subscription at no extra charge, regardless of which city plan you're on. This covers the entire country.

Provincial-registry products (e.g. Alberta Health Services directory, AGLC licensees, corporate registry signals) are specific to their province and listed separately on city landing pages for provincial capitals and major cities in each province.
